Skills Development Summit
VISION 2020

28 - 29 October 2010 • CSIR International Convention Centre • Pretoria

The Skills Development Summit brings together key decision-makers from the public and private sectors to discuss trends and issues in skills development in South Africa.

Earlier this year Achiever magazine, a quarterly magazine published by Cape Media Corporation, hosted the Skills and Training Summit. Following on the outcomes of the summit we have identified, as a critical issue, the lack of forward planning in both the public and private arena regarding skills development.

Notably, it was clear that much attention is being given to the needs of the current pillars of our economy (mining and manufacturing) with little being done to ensure that South Africa is able to compete on a large scale in the emerging international economy of intellectual property, green jobs and so on.

It should also be noted that if we implement strategic skills development now we could also create new streams of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

The Achiever magazine team is hosting the Skills Development Summit, focusing on the future skills needs of SAs economy, with the theme of VISION 2020. We need to focus on the skills needs of 2020 but we also need to look at the issues with a clear vision.

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Alvin Toffler

Issues to be discussed include:

  • Green training and jobs
  • The role of skills development in economic development
  • BBBEE in skills development
  • Facilitating access to, mobility and progression within education, training and career paths
  • Analysis of current skills trends
  • Organised labour in skills development
  • Training and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
  • How to maximum your return on training investment
  • Skills development: Give your organisation the competitive edge
  • Aligning skills development with business strategy
  • Apprenticeships into 2020

Incorporated within the Skills Development Summit is the Skills Development Expo.

Meetings Direct
Strategic business development

Strategic marketing is today’s answer to tough and tight budgets. It calls for a focused allocation of planning and effort to pinpoint opportunities in the minimum time - and to close the deal. It is the 21st century version of networking.

Now for the first time leading events organiser Cape Media Corporation is applying a strategic marketing initiative to all future conferences through its exclusive Meetings Direct programme.

Using the latest technology the objectives of each conference participant - delegates, exhibitors and visitors - are profiled to establish how their needs and expectations can be best met through targeted meetings with other participants with similar interests. Focused discussions and presentations can then follow.

The unique Meetings Direct programme puts the interested parties together - one on one - immediately, unlike the days of networking when a delegate could spend many hours searching for the appropriate contact often without success.

With its emphasis on efficient and strategic marketing the Meetings Direct programme brings a new and exciting dimension to Cape Media’s business, investment and trade conferences - and much added value for those taking part.
